Students, their
parents, and educators around the world are feeling the extraordinary ripple
effect of the novel coronavirus as schools are shutting down and quarantine
methods are being ordered to cope with the global pandemic. While
governments and health officials are doing their best slowing down the
outbreak, global education systems are collaborating to collectively respond
and provide quality education for all during these difficult times.
The crisis is
exacerbating pre-existing education disparities by reducing the opportunities
for many of the most vulnerable children, youth, and adults to continue their learning. The pandemic has pushed the
world into the deepest global recession in living memory which will have
lasting effects on economies and public finances. The massive efforts made in a
short time to respond to the shocks to education systems remind us that change
is possible. We should seize the opportunity to find new ways to address the
learning crisis and bring about a set of solutions previously considered
difficult or impossible to implement. However, the mission of all
education systems is the same. It is to overcome the learning crisis we were
already living and respond to the pandemic we are all facing. The challenge
today is to reduce as much as possible the negative impact this pandemic will
have on learning and schooling and build on this experience to get back on a
path of faster improvement in learning. As education systems cope with this
crisis, they must also be thinking of how they can recover stronger, with a
renewed sense of responsibility of all actors and with a better understanding
and sense of urgency of the need to close the gap in opportunities and assuring
that all children have the same chances for a quality education.
The education community should learn from each other about the ways of providing quality education that will help students thrive in a better world. Students like me should also be focusing on being a responsible person and a person with patience and understanding. Everyone should also be helping each other to provide quality education even in these difficult times. Let's fight for a better quality education.
